日本に長期滞在する外国人の方は、「国際免許証」だけではずっと車を運転できるわけではありません。
For foreigners staying in Japan long-term, an International Driver’s Permit (IDP) alone does not allow you to drive indefinitely.
国際免許は発行から1年間しか有効であり、それを過ぎると日本での運転はできません。
An IDP is valid for only one year from the date of issue. After that, it cannot be used to drive in Japan.

2. 国際免許の有効期限 / Validity of the IDP
国際免許は 発行日から1年間 有効です。1年を過ぎると、日本で車を運転することは法律で禁止されます。

そのため、長期滞在者は早めに「外免切替（外国免許切替）」を考える必要があります。
Therefore, long-term residents should consider “Gaikenkirikae” (foreign license conversion) well before expiration.

3. 外国免許から日本免許への切替 / Switching from Foreign to Japanese License
外免切替とは、外国で取得した運転免許を日本の運転免許に切り替える手続きのことです。
“Gaikenkirikae” refers to the process of converting a foreign driver’s license into a Japanese one.
